Nigerian Poet and activist Maryam Bukar Hassan, also known by her stage name Alhanislam, has been appointed by the United Nations as its first-ever Global Advocate for Peace. This marks the first time the UN has named an individual to represent its entire peace and security pillar through creative arts.
Hailing from Borno State, Maryam has spent years using poetry to speak on issues affecting youth, women, and communities affected by conflict. Her performances have earned her a strong presence on international platforms including TED, the World Bank Youth Summit, and multiple United Nations conferences.

Being the founder of Through My Voice, Hassan has mentored over 5,000 young Africans, empowering them to raise awareness on peace, justice, and social change. Her appointment reflects the UN’s expanding embrace of storytelling and art as tools for advancing peace, especially within the frameworks of the Women and Security agendas.
Her impactful work has earned her several international recognition, including the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28 and finalist honors for the 2024 UN SDG Creativity Award. Her debut as Global Advocate was announced during a performance at New York’s SummerStage festival, where she shared the stage with Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti and Cape Verdean singer Elida Almeida.
Speaking on the significance of her appointment, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, said:
“The commitment of our Global Advocate will amplify the peace and security priorities of the United Nations. Her voice will shine a spotlight on the vital role of women and youth in building inclusive, lasting peace.”

Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, echoed the sentiment:
“Art moves hearts and sparks change. Through her poetic brilliance, Maryam Hassan has shown that creativity is not only a medium of expression, but a powerful tool for peacebuilding, dialogue, and inclusion.”
With her new appointment, Maryam Bukar Hassan joins the ranks of global changemakers using art to bridge and reimagine a more peaceful Africa and world at large.
